In part two, focus on the geology in southern Africa, including the countries of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Zambia. Ancient continental crust forms the basement rock in these countries, including rocks that date back to approximately three billion years ago. Africa’s iconic Zambezi River traverses this region from west to east, and includes the ever-evolving Victoria Falls. In Botswana and South Africa, strange volcanoes called kimberlites erupted in the distant past, bringing diamonds from deep in the crust to the surface.
