The extreme conditions of the highest reaches of our local mountains will show us adaptability at the edge. A moderately difficult hike of five miles over 1,100 vertical feet out of the ski basin parking lot allows us to encounter many micro-habitats and soaring views. Organisms near the tree line must adapt to windy, cold and often dry conditions, and when water is present, it is frozen for a good part of the year. Views of the Pacheco Fire will give us an idea of the long cycle of succession at high elevations. Please bring your hiking gear, rain wear and lunch. Meet at the lower end of the Santa Fe Ski Area parking lot at the Winsor Trailhead.
