It's more than just conserving water. We want to make our environments and our lives green, fertile and productive. Working with nature to create oases in our own yards and communities can be done! How? By tapping into the resources and gifts from the earth that are already around us. We can install simple rock structures on degraded land to harvest storm water for erosion control and wildlife. We can design our own greywater systems to make the water we use in our homes go twice as far. All biomass, including our country's overabundance of food waste, can be turned into fertile soil by composting it and returning it to the land. Organic matter in the soil holds huge amounts of water longer. See how Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center employs these simple techniques. Ampersand is a permaculture demonstration center where they have lived off rainwater as a sole supply for twenty years in a high desert environment. This online class is an introduction to the ways they have learned to treat water like the precious resource it is.
