Since the arrival of Islam in the Indian subcontinent, Sufi masters have lived, traveled, and left a legacy among the communities of the region. Today, north India and Pakistan are scattered with Sufi dargahs, or tombs, that remain alive with devotees paying homage to great masters in the form of prayers, offerings, and devotional music known as “qawwali.” In this workshop, we will watch and listen to several examples of Sufi qawwali and discuss the rich history of this musical tradition. With special attention to themes in the music and their presentation in the Sufi dargah, we will explore how a very local manifestation of Sufi practice has long bound together diverse religious communities in South Asia.
