Memoir and fiction have more in common than not. Unlike an autobiography which is a comprehensive and chronological recounting a one’s life, a memoir is a creative non-fiction story of an impactful memory, character shaping episode or recounting of a life-changing event. A memoir, like fiction, can take on a story-telling form, with character development and story arcs like a novel. Join this interactive class and learn storytelling concepts drawn from character archetypes, plot types, and Kurt Vonnegut’s thesis on the shape of stories, to make your fiction or memoir memorable. Each class will present writing concepts and the opportunity to apply the concepts in practice. Encompassing both memoir and fiction writing, a memoir is based on memories, whereas a fiction is based on imagination.
