Join us for an expert-led seminar and discussion on two recent winners of the National Book Award. We’ll start with Jason de Leon’s Soldiers and Kings: Survival and Hope in the World of Human Smuggling (2024). This UCLA anthropology professor spent almost ten years embedded with guides in Mexico who helped usher migrants to the northern border. A stunning work of oral history, this unflinching account gives voice to a world of “destitute men and women who find themselves trapped in a world of violence and fast money while in search of hope.” Next, we’ll discuss Lena Khalaf Tuffaha’s collection of poetry Something About Living (2024). Find both books at a local bookstore or online.
