Swing Shift Santa Fe is a group of amateur musicians dedicated to keeping Big Band Era music alive. This ~20-piece performance group consists of alto(2)/tenor(2)/baritone(1) saxophones, trumpets (4), piano, guitar, bass, trombones (4), percussion (hand percussion and trap set), and vocal musicians. Participants must have intermediate to advanced proficiency on their instrument and will require permission of the instructor to join. Aside from being exposed to the work of the great Big Band directors, such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, and others, students will become more proficient at sight reading, stylistic interpretation of music, ensemble building, improvisational skills, and stage presence. Each course culminates in a mandatory public performance.
