Geologic Hike along the Cañones Fault Zone and Painted Canyon, Abiquiu

For those of you who have previously hiked in or around Copper Canyon, Abiquiu, this outing will explore the continuation of the Cañones fault zone to the south, juxtaposing the Colorado Plateau and the Rio Grande Rift. Geologist Kirt Kempter will lead a 4.5 mile hike up a canyon that parallels and intersects the Cañones fault zone. You should be a strong hiker (able to hike Atalaya trail in Santa Fe). Many different rock units are exposed in the canyon, including gorgeous formations and colors in strata from the Triassic and Jurassic periods. Our group will convene in Abiquiu at a designated location and carpool to the hike location. You should bring appropriate hiking attire, picnic lunches, and water. Walking sticks are recommended.
