Learn about the changes that Earth has experienced through time, with a focus on the geology and paleontology of New Mexico and the Southwest. This course will explore the scientific discoveries and breakthroughs that led to an understanding of “deep time” – the realization of the immense age of the Earth and the incredible changes that it has undergone since its formation. The course will explore absolute (chronological) and relative dating methods and reveal how discoveries in geology influenced our understanding of the history of life on earth. We will also discuss paleontology, the study of ancient life, and how fossils found here in New Mexico have played an important role in understanding the past. No prior knowledge of geology or science required.
