Navigating rugged terrain is a skill that requires both technical tools and a heightened awareness of the natural world. In this course, you’ll learn how to effectively use your electronic devices, such as smartphones, GPS units, and more, as part of your navigation toolkit. You’ll also tune in to the signs nature provides, like plant growth, sun angles, and terrain features, and learn how to link these to topographic map contours. The course begins with an introduction to compass use, electronic tools, waypoints, route-following, and map reading. After this foundational training, we’ll head into the field for a moderate hike, both on and off trail.
