Learn about the basics of geology, with a focus on the geology of New Mexico and the Southwest. This course will cover the nature of the materials and processes that make up and shape the land that we live on. Topics will include an overview of minerals and rocks, plate tectonics, volcanism, erosion, and geologic hazards. New Mexico is the perfect place to observe nearly every type of geologic process, landform, and feature. This classroom-based course will provide the student with the knowledge and understanding to better appreciate and enjoy the many outstanding geological features of New Mexico’s landscape. This course will be followed in an upcoming term by Geology Fundamentals – Part Two: Earth History, which will focus on the changes the Earth through time and paleontology – the study of ancient life.
