This 1-day tour will explore the geology of the Galisteo Basin, including the Cerrillos Hills. We will carpool from Santa Fe at a designated meeting point. Our loop will take us south to the town of Eldorado then drop down into Galisteo Basin. Weather permitting, an easy 2-mile hike is possible at the Galisteo Basin Preserve. We will then travel through the village of Galisteo before heading west to the Cerrillos Hills. Many important geologic sites and events will be discussed as we traverse this landscape, including the volcanic history of the Cerrillos Hills and Ortiz Mountains, the preservation of abundant petrified trees, the onset of rifting in the Santa Fe area, and how the geology of the Galisteo Basin impacts oil, gas, and water in the area.
