Finding your way across rugged terrain is a skill honed on many levels, which can be accomplished in a multitude of ways. In this course you will have the opportunity to learn about your electronic device, whether it be a smartphone, a GPS unit, or other, as one of our tools. You will also be tuning your senses to the signs around you, such as plant growth, sun angle, terrain features, and associating the latter with contours on a map. The basics of compass, electronic tools, entering waypoints, following a route, and topographic maps are included during the beginning of the course. After this sedentary intro, we’ll head into the field for a moderate hike on and off trail. Keep your eyes on the summer session for Orienteering part 2- unplugged, map, and compass only.
