Swing Shift Santa Fe is a group of amateur musicians dedicated to keeping Big Band Era music alive. This approximately 20-piece performance group consists of alto(2)/tenor(2)/baritone(1) saxophones, trumpets (4), piano, guitar, bass, trombones (4), percussion (hand percussion and trap set), and vocal musicians. To have the best experience in this class, students are strongly encouraged to have intermediate to advanced experience on their instrument. Aside from being exposed to the work of the great Big Band directors, such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, and others, students will become more proficient at sight reading, stylistic interpretation of music, ensemble building, improvisational skills, and stage presence. Each course culminates in a mandatory public performance. Class time includes set up and tear down time. Students must provide own instrument, music stand, and accessory equipment.
