« back to classes page
One of the more dynamic ecosystems, piñon and juniper woodlands display many diverse facets of species interactions. During 2 walks, you will encounter multiple levels of ecology, from the pervasive, microscopic cryptobiotic crusts to the global scale of climatic variation. Discuss the interplay of human-induced change, drought, fire, competition and cooperation between piñons and junipers, episodic outbreaks of insects, and why this ecosystem is the most sensitive to small variations in moisture and temperature. Students will provide their own transportation. Bring water and your lunch.
