Explore the remarkable adaptability of life in the extreme conditions at the highest reaches of our local mountains. This moderately difficult 5-mile hike, with a 1,100-foot vertical ascent from the ski basin parking lot, offers a chance to discover various micro-habitats and enjoy expansive, soaring views. Organisms living near the tree line must endure windy, cold, and often dry conditions, with water often remaining frozen for much of the year. As we hike, you’ll also observe the aftermath of the Pacheco Fire and gain insight into the long cycle of ecological succession at high elevations.
