In this course, you will continue to develop your orienteering skills. The morning session tunes your skills of interpreting topographic maps and reading terrain. You’ll also train your sense of direction from clues available in the field. A base plate compass is the versatile tool you’ll use to develop greater skill as a route guide, a protractor, and for triangulations. Our goal is to be capable with a compass and map to plot a route, interpret that route, and then follow the off-trail course. In small teams, you will negotiate and problem solve that challenging route independently of the instructor for short periods in the afternoon, which involves navigating rough terrain, projecting, and following bearings to find the specific series of waypoints.
