This course is designed for those with prior experience working with clay and using a pottery wheel. You'll create pieces that undergo both a bisque firing and a Raku firing—an ancient Japanese technique known for its dramatic and unpredictable results. In the Raku process, ceramic forms are fired to approximately 1,840°F, then removed from the kiln while glowing red-hot and placed in a container with combustibles. This step not only infuses the piece with rich, smoky tones but can also leave unique imprints in the glaze, which, when molten like molasses, develops striking crackles and vibrant colors. While the focus is on wheel-thrown forms, some handbuilding will also be incorporated.
