Much of New Mexico was once covered by native prairie grasses and wildflowers, and there are many benefits to incorporating native grasses in our home gardens and landscapes. Native grasses are adapted to our climate, they are drought tolerant and pest resistant, and their deep root systems improve the health and stability of our soils. Grasses also play an important role in supporting a wide range of wildlife and beneficial insects by providing shelter, food, and nesting material. Taller bunch grasses can be used as dramatic focal points, adding texture and movement throughout the year, while smaller bunch grasses can be mixed in with flowering perennials. How to create a small meadow or informal lawn from seed will also be discussed. We will tour the Santa Fe Extension Master Gardeners native grass and wildflower meadow restoration demonstration gardens.
