South Rim of the Valles Caldera Ecology Hike

This 6-mile, round-trip hike will take you through the ecology of the Caldera floor to the southern rim, with a focus on the aftermath of the Las Conchas Fire of June 2011. You’ll witness how different habitats and ecosystems have responded to varying burn intensities, from mild to severe. The hike also covers the impact of the La Mesa and Dome fires to the east and south, offering insight into how the southern Jemez Mountains have evolved through drought, fire, and regeneration.
