Hiking the Cerrito de la Ventana Dike, Abiquiu

This 4-mile moderately strenuous hike follows the Cerrito de la Ventana dike near Abiquiu, NM. Explore the dynamics of magma intrusion into the host sedimentary rock, the Abiquiu Formation. The dike forms a dark, linear ridge in the region for approximately 5 miles. There will be excellent vistas of the surrounding landscape, allowing for a discussion on the geologic history of the Abiquiu region. Our group will convene in Abiquiu at a designated location and carpool to the hike location. Participants should bring appropriate hiking attire, picnic lunches, and water. Walking sticks are recommended.
