Join geologist Kirt Kempter for a geologic hike in spectacular badland country north of Nambé. The hike will traverse approximately 4.5 miles through 15-16 million year old sediments of the Tesuque Formation, a major rock unit in the Rio Grande Rift. Erosion of these strata is producing beautiful hoodoos and other stunning shapes. The hike provides a wonderful outdoor classroom to discuss the geologic history of the Española Basin and to observe important geologic features preserved in the strata, including volcanic ash beds from giant eruptions in Nevada. Elevation gain/loss on the hike is approximately 300 feet. You should bring adequate water, lunches, and all weather hiking gear. Walking sticks/hiking poles are recommended.
